Fortune Peak Hut (3,760')

A sled-accessible backcountry hut within reach of steep peaks, pillow lines, and powder fields. With the inclusion of a wood-barrel sauna, visitors can reset after lapping nearby passes or riding larger objectives bordering the Alpine Lakes Wilderness.

Overview

Fortune Peak Huts is situated just north of Cle Elum, WA – east of the Cascade Crest in the upper Teanaway Valley. In the immediate vicinity of camp, visitors can see Esmeralda Peaks, Koppen Mountain, Teanaway Mountain, and Iron Peak. Given this hut’s position, visitors can expect a variety of terrain, aspects, and elevations – from protected tree skiing during storm days to the flanks of 9,000’+ peaks catering to more ambitious days or spring-skiing objectives.

Located at the location of the summertime DeRoux Campground, Fortune Peak Huts manages two eight-person WeatherPort structures composed of a metal frame and insulated fabric. At 14' x 30', each hut has four bunk beds, a dining table, and a kitchen area. The nearby wood-barrel sauna seats up to eight friends, and the outhouse is an enclosed vault toilet leveraging existing infrastructure from the summertime campground. Firewood is stored in a trailer outside of the southernmost hut, and tools to split wood into kindling are available as well. The hut’s power is provided by an array of solar panels outside of the hut, and panels should be monitored regularly to ensure maximum collection and to avoid build up of snow/ice.

Water is collected from the nearby Teanaway River all season long, and two high-powered propane burners make cooking and boiling water quick and easy. Dishwashing is managed via a three-step wash / rinse / diluted bleach cycle, and all wastewater is dispensed into sealable grey water cans that are removed / emptied after every trip. For those adamant about filtering their water, gravity filters are available to do so.

Given camps access via the 29 Pines Sno Park, this hut also services motorized users; motorized access is essential for the operations of the camp, so all guests are encouraged to be mindful and intentional in sharing this multi-use area. If leveraging snowmachines, please be mindful of boundaries of the nearby Alpine Lakes Wilderness and any other restrictions that may be in place.

Fortune Peak Huts offers a shuttle service for groups via snow machine – this service includes a round-trip gear porter for the full eight miles, and a four-mile roundtrip tow from 29 Pines Sno Park to Beverly Camp. Visitors without their own snow machines are responsible for touring the 4-mile stretch between the hut and Beverly Camp.

Fortune Peak Huts offers guided programming to be added to individual trips, as well as guided educational opportunities around avalanche education or advanced skills development.
