Woody Creek Cabin is a short tour from Cooke City, nestled in a forest near the confluence of Hayden & Woody Creek. Visitors will have easy access to the Hayden Creek basin, Woody Ridge, and the opportunity for longer descents into the Republic Creek basin.
A ~2-mile walk from downtown Cooke City, the Woody Creek Cabin is located 1/4 mile north of the Wyoming border. Nestled in the forest near the confluence of Woody and Hayden Creek, visitors have direct access to the Hayden Creek zone south of the cabin. Prominent features in this zone include Woody Ridge, The Submarine, Coyote Peak, Index Peak, and Pilot Peak. The riding opportunities around the cabin include low-angle glade skiing, ribbed gullies on various aspects, alpine bowls, and steep technical descents.
The cabin itself is a 20’ x 24’ two-story structure with three bunk beds downstairs and four mattresses in the loft. The kitchen includes a propane three-burner stove and a wide selection of cooking supplies (pots, pans, strainers, coffee makers, coolers, etc.). Solar lighting is available in the cabin, but there is no access to charge devices. Water is gathered via melting snow in a large snowmelt tank atop the wood-burning stove, and a metal water reservoir is available for storing water. Wood chopping is available to the right of the front stairs, and a shovel + utility ice scraper are available for clearing the deck and stairs from snow & ice. A composting outhouse is external to the hut, as is a greywater + ash drop zone.
First-time visitors are required to book a first-time hut user oreintation, which also includes a 50-lb. porter. For groups that are interested, Beartooth Powder Guides offers the option to incorporate guided days to their trips, as well as the opportunity to rent snow surfers. Be sure to inquire in advance about guided offerings since availability could be limited on short notice.
Please contribute a trip report to share your experience for those who visit after you! This not only helps fellow riders, but it also helps hutkeepers ensure that the huts remain in good operating condition.
